Want to step up your dance game with ease? Try these dance life hacks and see the difference!

STRETCH DAILY

A quick stretch of your muscles first thing in the morning will help wake your body up for the day ahead whilst stretching just before you go to bed will help gain flexibility as its when your muscles are at their “stretchy-est”. Stretching also will help reduce injury- Win!

This is my favourite stretch routine to do in the morning- perfect after a morning run!

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN WITH MUSCLE MEMORY

‘Muscle memory’ is a motor skill acquired by repetition. Through dance you can practice muscle memory either by learning a new technique like wapping or street or by going through choreography physically.

When really struggling with a complex move, try practicing what you know of it over and over so after a while you can perform it automatically.

GO THROUGH OLD CHOREO

Learning doesn’t stop when the class does. Go through old pieces to keep your mind sharp for future ones. The more you can remember from an old dance, the more you can stretch your memory. Plus, remembering dances from the past forces your mind to think about your positioning, keeping your brain sharp.

WATCH AND LEARN

Watching a tight dance troupe is probably what brought your attention to the world of dance and if you watch closely, you can pick up tips for life. Ask yourself; How did the choreographer demonstrate creative transitions? How did the dancers mix big punchy hits with smooth lyrical movements?

AVOID THE JUNK

When you really want to step up your game, snacking on junk food is detrimental. But working hard and late practices make the junk an easy choice. Avoid the junk by planning ahead. Packing a bag of almonds, a couple of pieces of fruit and a cereal bar to snack on during a dance day will help reduce the temptation of that 5pm doughnut.
